San Pedro del Pinatar joins the Green Flags Movement campaign to encourage glass recycling (25/07/2019)

The Councilor for Tourism and Environment, Silvia Egea, and the Ecovidrio area manager, Roberto Fuentes, presented the Banderas Verdes summer campaign, which aims to recognize the coastal municipality of the Region with the most environmental award committed to the fight against Climate change and coastal protection through the recycling of glass containers.

The City Council of San Pedro del Pinatar and up to 150 establishments in the town will collaborate during the summer months to get this green flag granted by Ecovidrio, a non-profit organization responsible for managing the recycling of glass packaging waste in Spain.

The incidence of tourism and the increase in consumption makes the summer months a key stage for the selective collection of glass containers, since a third of all waste recovered annually is recycled.

San Pedro del Pinatar will be one of the 6 municipalities in total in the Region of Murcia that will involve their neighbors, hoteliers and public administrations to get the green flag that is delivered in their Region.

The criteria that will be taken into account for the winning ranking are the tons of containers collected on the objective, the number of participating hoteliers per municipality or the municipality's collaboration in communication and mobilization campaigns.

In addition, as an incentive for participation, the premises most committed to the recycling of glass containers and reaching a higher score, will receive as a prize a master class with Quique Dacosta, chef recognized with three Michelin Stars.

2018, record year in selective collection through the green container

According to the latest available data for 2018, the residents of San Pedro del Pinatar recycled a total of 424,440 kilograms of glass container waste.

This means an average of 16.9 kilograms of glass per person.

Regarding the rate of containerization, San Pedro del Pinatar is located with an average of 175 inhabitants per container, currently having a total of 144 igloos for glass container waste installed in the municipality.
