The counselor Antonio Luengo, holds a work meeting in San Pedro del Pinatar, with the mayors of the Mar Menor (06/08/2019)

The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment, Antonio Luengo, held a meeting today with the mayors of the municipalities of the Mar Menor (Cartagena, San Pedro del Pinatar, San Javier and Los Alcázares) which he described as “primary, because one of the priorities of the regional government is to recover the Mar Menor, hence the importance of meeting with the heads of their municipalities â€.

“The Mar Menor does not understand political differences, and the only objective of all of us who are lucky enough to work for their recovery is to do it in a united way,†said Luengo, who has requested a monthly meeting with the mayors, “as it is fundamental to work together and with a common message â€.

At the meeting, the current situation of the salt lagoon and the need to maintain collaboration from the regional, local and state administration were addressed.

"We need assistance from the State Coastal Demarcation and the Segura Hydrographic Confederation, as there are certain actions that are not delayed," said the counselor.

"Unfortunately, there are critical infrastructures that would prevent the entry of water that can be produced by the rains of September or October contain sediments and can harm the Mar Menor, for that reason there is no wait," he added.

It has also established the need to create a technical level communication protocol, which will meet every fifteen days, to have an exact and continuous relationship between the technicians of the coastal town halls and the regional Administration.

The Coast Demarcation and the CHS will also be requested to appoint a technical representative for that commission.

After the meeting, the mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitación Martínez, has shown her interest in carrying out the Zero Discharge Plan that is being processed by the ministry and will contemplate the necessary measures and infrastructure to undertake in the Mar Menor environment and get your full recovery.

In addition, the mayor has shown her satisfaction for the biweekly meetings of municipal technicians to talk about infrastructure such as, in the case of San Pedro del Pinatar, regeneration of Villananitos beach, cleaning protocols on beaches and the execution of rolling mills in the headwaters of the ramps that pour into the lagoon, so that they collect and prevent the arrival of flows loaded with “pollutants†to the Mar Menor.
