An emotional ceremony honors the pinatarenses salineros over the decades (25/09/2016)

Outside the municipal museum Benifayó Baron yesterday hosted this event, which honored more than 200 active employees, retirees and families of workers Salinas de San Pedro, on the 750th anniversary of annexation of the same to the Crown of Castile.

Around a thousand people gathered last night outside the Baron of Benifayó museum to honor the hundreds of men who over the centuries have worked in the Salinas de San Pedro, an age-old industry that is at the origin of municipality of San Pedro del Pinatar.

This commemorative event, organized by the city of San Pedro del Pinatar, the Friends of the Museums and Spanish Salinera, is part of the acts of the 750th anniversary of Annexation of San Pedro Salinas of the Kingdom of Castile by Alfonso X.

Thus, throughout the year they have carried out various activities, exhibitions, lectures and workshops aimed at reviewing the history and present of the Salinas de San Pedro, a key activity in economic and social development of the municipality.

In this sense, the mayor, Visitation Martinez, made a brief look at the evolution of work in the salt mines, from its Roman origins to the present, its various owners until it was acquired more than 95 years ago by the Spanish Salinera company and how it has evolved the process of elaboration of salt, with the mechanization of the work while maintaining the essence in tasks such as harvesting.

Visitation Martinez also highlighted the important ecological value of this industry, which draws up to 100,000 tons of salt a year in perfect balance with the natural environment in which it develops, contributing to the maintenance and conservation of the Salinas Regional Park and Arenales of San Pedro.

The mayor had an impact on the thousands of hours of work of hundreds of pinatarenses over the centuries who have made this collective legacy, a story that is also the municipality.

After the screening of a video that reviews this history and how it has evolved work in the salt mines in recent years, the mayor handed to Pedro Vallejo, quality coordinator of Spanish Salinera in San Pedro del Pinatar and third generation of workers this company, of a plaque commemorating the 750th anniversary of the annexation.

Later, the mayor, Pedro Vallejo, the Councillor for Culture, Silvia Egea, the regional deputy Monica Meroño, and the president of the Association of Friends of Museums, José Andrés Lorente, made delivery to more than 200 honorees diploma recognition .

The commemoration of the 750th anniversary will end on Saturday, October 8, with an open day Salinera facilities, which will have two shifts visit upon registration.
