San Pedro del Pinatar commemorates the 125th anniversary of the Pilgrimage of the Virgin of Carmen that goes on to name one of the main roads of the municipality (18/05/2017)

The town celebrates the maritime roots of this festival through exhibitions, school competition, recovery of traditions, musical shows, guided tours to the auction and tribute to local fishermen.

The mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitación Martínez, the major patron of the Fishermen's Guild, Jesus Gómez, and the secretary of the Association of the Virgin of Carmen, Paqui Martínez, today presented the program of commemorative events for the 125th anniversary of The Romería of the Virgin of the Carmen.

Visitation Martínez has extolled the work of the Fishermen's Guild, founded in 1917 and responsible for organizing the maritime procession, and the Association of the Virgin of Carmen, whose existence dates back to 1923 and organizes religious and cultural events.

These three institutions have worked hand in hand to create an extensive program of activities to commemorate the 125th anniversary, in addition to the initiative, approved at the City Council plenary in December 2016, of the change of the name of the former Generalissimo Avenue by Avenida Romería de la Virgen del Carmen, with the aim of paying tribute to this festivity, since much of the land pilgrimage circulates along this route.

Activity program

Thus, the program starts in May with the exhibition of the 125th anniversary of the Virgen del Carmen Pilgrimage, in the Barón de Benifayó museum, which collects images, sculptures, documents and dozens of articles related to the festival since its inception.

Also during this month, informative talks are being held in various schools in the municipality, through which more than 150 children are discovering the curiosities of this party to reflect after an artistic way their vision of this tradition in a school competition, whose works Will be exhibited on June 8 in the Art Space of the House of Culture.

On Sunday, July 9 will be the XII Concert of the Music Unit of the Gneeral Air Academy.

On July 11, 12 and 13, liturgical events will be celebrated, with the preparatory triduum of the Feast of the Virgin of the Carmen and the imposition of medals of the new members of the Association and the appointment of honorary member to the bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena, José Manuel Lorca Plans.

On July 13 and 14, the fishermen's guild organizes guided tours to the fish market, where participants can learn about traditional fishing gear or the auction of fish and culminate with the tasting of a traditional cauldron.
