San Pedro del Pinatar joins Earth Hour for another year (24/03/2018)

Earth Hour was born 11 years ago in Sydney, as a symbolic gesture to draw attention to the problem of climate change, to which every year cities around the world show their support by turning off the lights of its main monuments and buildings to demonstrate global support for action against climate change.

We are living an era that is chaining the warmest years of history, with prolonged heat waves and droughts, increasingly frequent extreme weather events and displacement of people due to climate change, which is also one of the main causes of biodiversity loss.

The Paris Agreement establishes 2020 as the deadline to begin implementing the commitments to reduce CO2 emissions worldwide.

Municipalities have a great responsibility to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and thus curb the loss of biological diversity.

Reducing energy consumption, promoting self-consumption, promoting mobility without emissions, greening cities, restoring rivers and forests are measures that many municipalities are already undertaking.

And they must inform and sensitize their citizens so that they adopt a healthier and more responsible way of life with the climate and with the rest of the living beings.

This year, San Pedro del Pinatar joins again the Earth Hour, as a gesture of the municipality's involvement in the adoption of energy efficiency measures and reduction of emissions into the atmosphere.

The municipality's commitment began with the accession of San Pedro del Pinatar to the Covenant of Mayors, which brings together thousands of local and regional authorities with a voluntary commitment to apply the EU climate and energy objectives in their territories, resulting in the approval of a Sustainable Municipal Energy Action Plan with the objective of reducing CO2 emissions and the implementation of concrete measures to replace public lighting with more efficient ones.

This effort continues with the approval of a Strategy for Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development of the municipality that establishes an integrated and participatory action protocol to fulfill, among others, environmental and climatic aspects to build a sustainable future.

Therefore, today March 24, from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, the lights of the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (Plaza Luis Molina) will be turned off and we invite all citizens to join the celebration of Earth Hour.

WWF encourages those who join the campaign at www.horadelplaneta.es to choose a cause for which they turn off the light, with the concept #YoApagoPor
