The extension of the concession of the port of Lo Pagán will allow to open new maritime transport routes between San Pedro del Pinatar and La Manga (06/04/2018)

The construction of the multi-purpose dock includes a floating dock for berthing of boats, a new bus shelter and a ticket office on the dock.

The extension of the concession term, requested by the current manager of the Lo Pagán marina, will involve an investment of more than 484,000 euros that will allow the creation of an intermodal transport point that will facilitate the opening of new shipping routes in the Mar Menor, with the construction of a polyvalent dock.

In addition, it will make it possible to access maritime transport comfortably because it locates the bus stop and the ferry access pier in the same space.

This was announced today by the Minister of the Presidency and Development, Pedro Rivera, who accompanied by the mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitation Martinez, presented this investment that involves the extension of the concession for an additional period of ten years and ten months, which it will also have an impact on productivity improvement, energy efficiency and the quality of port facilities.

Pedro Rivera highlighted "the transportation and tourism opportunities offered by the possibility of connecting the municipality of San Pedro del Pinatar by sea with the northern zone of La Manga, and doing so in a way that is very comfortable modal interchange, so that not only use the neighbors of this coastal municipality, but visitors who come on long bus routes that currently have their stop at the port can do it ".

The counselor reported that, as announced today the Official Gazette of the Region of Murcia (BORM), tomorrow begins the public exhibition of the request made by the Lo Pagán Yacht Club, which includes the project with the works of improvement that it will execute in its facilities.

Currently the port has five marshlands and several docks, which are 424 mooring points for boats with a maximum length of 14 meters.

The most significant work will be the construction of a multi-purpose dock for passenger boarding and the adaptation of accessible pedestrian intermodal itinerary for users to use in land-sea exchange.

Pedro Rivera highlighted the "opportunity" of this new facility, since during 2018 the European Commission celebrates the Year of Multimodality in the area of transport.

The new infrastructure includes a floating dock 75 meters long for the berthing of maritime transport vessels, a new bus shelter marquee and a heated waiting room with ticket office at the dock.

In terms of environmental quality, the project also contemplates installing a portable pumping system to collect water that prevents discharges into the sea.

Likewise, manholes will be renewed in pontoons and supply turrets for energy efficiency and early detection of water leaks.

Extension of concessions

Pedro Rivera pointed out that "the extension of the concession is possible thanks to a regulatory change in the State, in order to boost the flexibility of the markets and make the regional economy more competitive".

The extensions of the ports of Santiago de la Ribera, in San Javier, and Mazarrón have recently been authorized.

"It is a beneficial measure for the nautical sector because it gives continuity to the management of the clubs and also for the users, since when renovating the port infrastructures the provision of the public services they offer is improved," said the regional manager, and recalled "the Regional Government's commitment to the marinas as elements that generate wealth and fundamental pieces of the sustainable tourism model with high added value that we seek for the Community".

"The high occupancy registered during the past summer highlights the quality of the regional marinas and the service offered by the concessionaires of these facilities," said Rivera, who stressed that the decisive contribution for these infrastructures is "the excellence of our coast".
