AFEM opens a day center for people with mental illness in San Pedro del Pinatar (06/07/2013)

This center, located in a residence donated by the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception in Lo Pagan has 25 beds, 10 of them arranged by the Instituto Murciano Social Action (IMAS)

The president of the Association of Families and Persons with Mental Illness Mar Menor (AFEM), Juana Romero, CEO of Persons with Disabilities of IMAS, John Brown and the mayors of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitation Martinez, San Javier, Juan Martinez, Torre Pacheco, Daniel García, inaugurated yesterday the day center for this association, located in Lo Pagan (San Pedro del Pinatar).

This led day center for people with mental illness has 25 beds, 10 of them arranged by the IMAS, and offers comprehensive care users and their families through information and support services, counseling, psycho-education, adult education, and art workshops, tai chi, expression and creation, cooking, sports, information, analysis of reality, group psychotherapy, deactivation techniques and kinesiology, emotional work, cognitive stimulation and basic activities of daily living.

The center has several classrooms, common areas, dining room and kitchen, among other places, also offers shuttle service and support to users.

The building, a former religious residence located in on Francis Street in the coastal hamlet of Lo Pagan, has been given to the association by the order of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate.

During the opening ceremony, President of AFEM noted that this association was founded in 2008, formed by a group of family members, people with mental illness and professionals in order to improve and enhance the creation of resources to promote the integration of people with mental illness in the region of the Mar Menor.

Likewise, Joanna Romero thanked institutional support and generosity of the Franciscan Sisters, and invited all attendees to be "active members" of this project that reaches a new dimension with the launch of the center.

For his part, the mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar AFEM said "is the best guarantee in front of a project like this," and recalled the work being done in the region both with patients and families as to citizenship, to through awareness raising and sensitization.

The CEO of Persons with Disabilities of IMAS indicated that through this institution have been concluded 10 of the 25 seats accredited this center and said the effort disabilities is a priority for the regional administration.

The opening ceremony was also attended by representatives of the General Air Academy, of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate, councilors of the municipalities in the region, Murcia FEAFES members and dozens of family and center users.
