The Plumbum project of the Hippocamus Association presents results on World Environment Day (05/06/2018)

The Visitor Center of the Salinas y Arenales Regional Park of San Pedro del Pinatar has welcomed today the balance of the Plumbum project, for the disappearance of lead in the seabed, developed by the Hippocampus Association.

On the occasion of the celebration of the World Environment Day, the Hippocampus association from Pinar del Rio has carried out in the Visitor Center the salt works the balance of the Plumbum project, a nationally recognized initiative that it develops with the collaboration of the waste management company Mahe and thanks to which they have managed to remove 585.7 kilos of lead from the seabed.

The project consists in the installation of containers in the collaborating diving centers so that the divers can deposit in them the pieces of lead found during the dive.

Subsequently, staff of the Hippocampus association removed the stored waste and transferred it to the facilities of the company Mahe for its treatment and recycling.

In the act, presented by the board of directors of the Hippocampus association, the devastating effects that lead leaves on our seabed have been revealed, passing into the food chain and being a threat to health.

In addition, the importance of citizen awareness and the altruistic work carried out by different groups to end these deposits has been emphasized.

The event was attended by the General Director of the Natural Environment, Consolación Rosauro, the councilor for Transparency and Citizen Participation, Fuensanta García, and the creators of the project, Cristina Mena and José Luis Alcaide, members of Hippocampus.

It has also been delivered to all persons, associations, diving clubs, federations, confederations and participating volunteers, of a certificate in Corporate Social Responsibility, for all the effort involved in extracting this heavy material from the seabed.

Thus, a special mention has been made to the company Mahe, a company that has been given a special certificate in Corporate Social Responsibility for its involvement in this project.

In addition, this company has made a donation of 1,464.25 euros to the Hippocampus association so they can continue with this interesting project so beneficial for our seabed.
