The Salinas y Arenales Regional Park of San Pedro del Pinatar celebrates the 'month of posidonia' with 'online' information on this marine plant (08/08/2020)

| It is an algae that provides numerous benefits, as it protects the beaches from erosion , is a refuge and the place where thousands of marine species feed | The situation generated by the Covid-19 pandemic has limited the realization of face-to-face activities The General Directorate of Natural Environment, of the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment, celebrates the 'month of posidonia' during August, with which it is intended to value this fundamental marine plant for the conservation of the Mediterranean and that brings numerous benefits for fishing and tourism. Thus, since the beginning of the month, the social networks of the Regional Park have made a series of publications that allow "discovering the posidonia as if it were the first time" and offer information on the characteristics of this marine plant. Every summer, through the Regional Park Information Service, different actions are carried out with the aim of making bathers aware of the importance of Posidonia oceanica, a native plant of the Mediterranean that reaches the beaches in the form of dry leaves and other remains such as the well-known 'sea balls'.

However, this time it has chosen to promote 'online' initiatives due to the restrictions generated by the Covid-19 pandemic. In the same way, information on the great biodiversity that Posidonia can harbor has been made available to interested parties, since it offers shelter, food and areas for laying eggs to many species of mollusks and fish, while generating large amount of oxygen and fixes CO2, helping to reduce the greenhouse effect and climate change.

They are essential for capturing sand and other suspended particles.

Therefore, its presence indicates that the waters are clean and the beaches are made of natural sand. Starting on August 20, there will be a debate on the benefits that posidonia brings in and out of the water.

Especially relevant are the vegetal mountains on the shores, called banquettes, which slow down the impact of the waves on the coasts, which prevents the loss of sand and contributes to the conservation of the beach. Finally, on August 27 a video will be published with tips to help all residents of the area and visitors to contribute to the conservation of the oceanic Posidonia marine plant.
