Generalist Avenue will be called Romería de la Virgen del Carmen (01/12/2016)

The plenary of the City of San Pedro del Pinatar has approved the motion to change the name of this important route of the municipality, as a tribute to the party that every July 16 brings together thousands of people in the town.

The plenary of the City of San Pedro del Pinatar today approved the motion presented by PP and Citizens to denominate the Romería Avenue of the Virgen del Carmen to the current Generalísimo Avenue, in compliance with the Law of Historical Memory and with the aim of paying homage to This festival, which every year brings together thousands of people in the sea and land pilgrimage.

The Councilor for Statistics, Álvaro Tárraga, explained that this is one of the most important roads in the municipality, so it is understood that its change of denomination is mandatory and it has been proposed to name the Romería de la Virgen del Carmen because of the importance and roots of This festivity, which in 2017 will mark 125 years of history.

In addition, much of this pilgrimage runs along this street.

Leaving from the Church of San Pedro and until its arrival to the sea in Lo Pagán, every July 16 the Land Pilgrimage takes place that later continues with a unique Romería Marítima in the Mar Menor.

Such an important event mobilizes not only the Pinatarenses, but thousands of tourists, so it is an important event for the locality, not only for religious fervor, but also as an economic and tourist engine for the area.

PARTY OF NATIONAL TOURISM INTEREST

On the other hand, the plenary also unanimously approved the motion presented by the municipal group People and Citizens for the declaration of holiday of national interest of the Festival of the Virgin of Carmen of San Pedro del Pinatar.

The Councilor for Tourism has recalled the roots of this holiday, which has hardly experienced changes in its format over the years, with the influx of people and boats becoming more numerous.

He pointed out that this celebration has been reinforced over time by the support and presence of the City Council, Fishermen's Guild and the Association of the Virgin of Carmen, who watch over both the maintenance of tradition and the order and security of the event, Which also has a large information coverage, due to the social and human interest it raises.

The council has added that nowadays "its importance for neighbors and visitors, already counting by thousands, the large spontaneous participation of pilgrims from all parts, the participation of many boats, and their uniqueness to pass by land and sea, Takes us to work to elevate the cataloging that at the moment owns the Festival of the Virgin of the Carmen ".

In addition, he recalled that the Regional Assembly unanimously approved at the plenary session last November 24 a motion presented by the popular group also directed to the Festival of the Virgin of Carmen to be declared of National Tourist Interest.

Therefore, the Plenary has agreed to request the declaration of National Tourist Interest, to seek the support and collaboration of the Fishermen's Guild and the Virgen del Carmen Association, in order to trace the course and the involvement of each of the parties in this draft;

To allocate a budget for this purpose in the municipal budgets, and to urge the Regional Government to carry out all necessary steps and procedures on its part.

Members of the Association of the Virgin of Carmen and the Fishermen's Guild, as well as the regional deputy of the Popular group, Mónica Meroño, wanted to support both agreements today.
