Red Cross presents a new vessel of Maritime Rescue in the Mar Menor (22/03/2018)

The new vessel is added to six of the Red Cross along the coast of the Region and will be available to volunteer teams to develop their work in the Mar Menor.

The president of the Red Cross in the Region of Murcia, Faustino Herrero, accompanied by Angela Gaona, councilor of Civil Protection and Police of San Pedro del Pinatar and by the Autonomous Secretary of the Ministry of the Presidency, Isabel Bueso, has opened this morning the LS -Selene, a new Maritime Rescue vessel that will be available to the volunteer teams of the humanitarian institution to develop their work in the Mar Menor.

The LS-Selene is a semi-rigid boat of Level B, with 8.5 meters of length and 2.44 meters of beam that will have its base of operations in the port of Lo Pagán and replaces the vessel LS- Del Mar Dos that returns to its base in Valencia, after almost 5 years of service in the waters of the Mar Menor.

The recently inaugurated LS-Selene comes in this way to join the other 6 Maritime Rescue vessels that Red Cross has on the Murcian coast, which represent the fundamental tool by which the Red Cross Maritime Rescue team in the Region of Murcia, composed by 136 volunteers, has been able to perform 412 assists, 60 of them in the waters of the Mar Menor.

The activities of the Red Cross teams in this area range from the rescue of human lives, the search and rescue of missing persons, support in search operations for survivors, to support in activities to combat pollution or the towing of vessels. in danger.

The Maritime Rescue program includes activities related to the protection of human life at sea.

Red Cross, in this area and in the legal framework provided by the Convention that the Spanish State has signed with the IMO (International Maritime Organization) for the rescue of human lives at sea, and the Framework Agreement and Action Plans of Red Cross with SASEMAR (State Maritime Rescue Society) develops the Maritime Rescue program, which can be considered as an intervention program in emergencies in the marine environment.

The role of the Red Cross is concretized in collaborating with the General Directorate for Citizen Security and Emergencies, under the Ministry of the Presidency, the body responsible for the matter in the Region of Murcia.

The involvement and participation of the Red Cross in this area is regulated by means of an Autonomous Agreement.

For its part, the Councilor for Civil Protection, Angela Gaona, has valued this type of investment that contributes to improving safety in the Mar Menor and has highlighted the collaboration with the Red Cross in the field of maritime rescue.
