Benifayó Baron Palace houses the archeological and ethnographic museum of San Pedro del Pinatar (21/12/2010)

The mayor, Jose Garcia, general director of Tourism, Marina Garcia, and the councilman of Culture, Mark David Grace, today inaugurated the new headquarters in a ceremony which recognized the academic work of Mas in July.

Benifayó Palace, known as the Russian House, today the museum houses archaeological and ethnographic San Pedro del Pinatar, where visitors can observe the historical and cultural city and its region.

The mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, Jose Garcia, general director of Tourism, Marina Garcia, and the councilman of Culture, Mark David Gracia, today inaugurated the new headquarters in which pieces of land and underwater various civilizations, such as Roman, Phoenician, Carthaginian or Arabic.

Following the ribbon-cutting, has made a tour of the museum, divided into four areas devoted, respectively, archeology, ethnography, history and temporary exhibitions toy.

The museum also recounts the story of the palace that houses it, with the recreation and restoration of one of the central rooms of the neo-Mudejar building built in 1878 commissioned by the then Baron Benifayó, July Falco D'Adda.

The course has been entertained by the actors of local theater workshop, dressed in period costumes, guided visitors through the different rooms of the museum.

Finally, paid tribute to Julio Mas, a pioneer in the recovery of underwater archaeological heritage of the region, who pointed out the importance of archaeological discoveries in the region of Cartagena from the late fifties.

After the ceremony, the councilman of Culture thanked the work of all those who made possible the establishment of this museum in 2001 as well as those who have succeeded, almost 11 years later, he moved to the emblematic Palacio Baron of Benifayó.

In this regard, he appreciated the donations and the cooperation of the residents of the village, thanks to which it has managed to give more substance to this museum.

For its part, the mayor has indicated that the museum can be found from archaeological pieces from the Phoenician era to machinery and photographs related to the production of salted fish, agriculture, or the removal of salt, the main offices of San Pedro del Pinatar so that visitors can take a virtual tour through the history and life of San Pedro over the centuries.

Garcia also stated that after the restoration of the building, completed last year, the museum has acquired furniture, funded with 69,000 euros by the central government through the second Plan E.

The Director General of Tourism, Marina Garcia, recalled that Benifayó Palace was restored thanks to a collaboration agreement between the Ministry of Tourism and the tourist association of the Mar Menor, in order to boost cultural tourism in the area.

In this regard, stressed the importance of promoting such initiatives in the region to extend the traditional tourist offer of sun and beach on the Mar Menor and break the seasonality of the sector.
