The Community aquaculture installed seven ships in San Pedro del Pinatar to improve the competitiveness of the sector in the Region (25/03/2011)

The Murcia Region ranks first in aquaculture production of fish in the entire country and generates more than 300 direct jobs and 1,500 indirect

The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, opened today in San Pedro del Pinatar, seven ships that will improve the logistics and regional competitiveness of the aquaculture sector.

These ships will help "ensure food safety in production and development will foster a favorable environment."

Each of these buildings has an area of 200 square meters and a volume of 850 cubic meters.

Involves an investment of 1.6 billion euros, funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Water, with financial support from European funds (European Fisheries Fund).

The counselor said these new facilities "have been sued by the industry to improve their working conditions, whose production is subject to so-called 'hygiene package' laid down in EU regulations.

Cerda said that these ships aquaculture "the conditions that the industry has sought and are nestled perfectly in the port environment."

The Region of Murcia is traditionally the first post of aquaculture production of fish in the entire country and generates more than 300 direct and 1,500 indirect jobs.

Aquaculture production in 2010 was 11,000 tonnes, mainly of species of sea bream and sea bass, and its economic value amounted to 55 million euros.

According to the Minister, "aquaculture in our region is addressed precisely to the establishment of aquaculture sites, in response to the need to manage the activities taking place on the coast and thus avoid conflict with other uses and activities that develop in it.

In this sense, the head of Agriculture regional government noted that "the planning of the coast of our region has allowed a development compatible with the environment" and stressed that the two main aquaculture production areas are concentrated in estates San Pedro del Pinatar and Gorguel, "which provided, without doubt, the business," he said.
