San Pedro del Pinatar host the IV International Day of Roma (17/04/2011)

The mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, José García Ruiz, said the Gypsy community in the municipality as an example of integration and praised their struggle for freedom, and the dissemination of important values ​​such as respect for the family.

The Municipality of San Pedro del Pinatar IV has welcomed today the commemoration of International Roma Day in a ceremony where the flag is flung Roma and has sung the national anthem of this country "Gelem Gelem."

During the event, held at the Plaza Luis Molina, across from City Hall, a member of the Association of Roma women Kalochi Kalo has read a manifesto recalling the roots and history of Roma and demanding a greater diffusion of its values, customs and traditions .

In this manifesto, has highlighted the work of Roma in the preservation of values ​​such as freedom and respect, and the dissemination of traditions like flamenco, recently declared World Heritage Site.

It also noted that the Gypsy community has been particularly affected by the crisis, because essentially is based on selling and self-employment, so it has asked the government to boost initiatives to support the social sector .

For its part, the mayor, José García, pointed out the gypsy community of San Pedro del Pinatar as an example of integration and thanked his involvement in local activities through partnerships.

It has also indicated that in the past four years, the municipal government team has worked to improve the quality of life of this group, primarily through training, offering various courses and workshops in collaboration with the associations.

During his speech, the mayor has carried a cane that gave Roma the municipality in the fair of cattle and closed his speech wishing "Health and Freedom" to all Roma in the municipality.

The event has been run by the Roma mediator of the municipality, Juan García Santiago, and has also involved the councilman of Culture, Mark David Grace.

Grace noted that since the council has worked to preserve and disseminate the customs of the Roma in the municipality.

After the speeches, a gypsy of the municipality has raised the flag of the Roma and the group has performed the anthem chaski "Gelem Gelem."

The ceremony was followed by dozens of Roma in the municipality, as well as the patriarchs of the various gypsy families of San Pedro del Pinatar and members of the corporation.

After the official ceremony was held a conference on culture, values ​​and customs of the Roma in Contemporary Film Theatre of the municipality where the group has also performed chaski.
