The Fishermen's Association estimates more than 26,000 kilos capture of eels in the campaign this year (23/01/2013)

The eel is one of the species most commonly caught in the Mar Menor, although its low consumption in the region makes about 80% is exported to countries like the Netherlands, Italy and Portugal.

The Fishermen's Association of San Javier is in full campaign eel, a species recently introduced in the local cuisine, but that is so common in the lagoon as veneers, or chirretes magres.

In fact, catches of this species varies annually between 20,000 and 30,000 kilograms, but most is exported to other European countries.

The pattern of the Fishermen's Association, Juan Pablo Martinez, has indicated that, to date, have captured 24 000 kilos of eel, a figure expected to increase from 3,000 to 4,000 kilos more before the end of the campaign in March.

The campaign begins in October eel, because the ban extends from April to September.

However, the pattern indicates that the months of December, January and February are the most capture because the cold, the darkness and the wind favoring fishing for this species, which is always in the waning of the moon stations.

Also, the pattern has highlighted that the wind of recent days has helped capture more than 7,000 kilos through traditional fishing gear, mainly that of paranza.

Fishermen daily eels move around tanks installed next to the fish market, where they are kept alive until they are transported by truck to various destinations of sale.

For his part, Councillor of Fisheries, Jose Guillermo Garcia, praised as "very positive" campaign this year, as it employs more than 50 people and around a dozen boats.
