The importance of rights, policies and actions of the European Union since the Maastricht Treaty was signed 20 years ago and the role of citizenship as a key to European integration and cohesion have focused today the start of the Sixth Conference Citizen Participation San Pedro del Pinatar

The mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitation Martinez and the Director General of the European Union and Foreign Affairs of the Autonomous Community, Carmen Sandoval, opened today the Sixth Conference of Citizen Participation, which this year try "Citizen Participation in Construction of Europe 20 years later. So, the mayor stressed the need to foster locally, debates and forums to reflect on the progress of the European Union and the future that is facing.

He added that the main objectives of this conference are to encourage reflection on the fundamental rights of European citizens, create opportunities for citizen participation, encourage debate on Europe in different groups, bringing Europe closer to the participants, explaining to elementary students do European citizenship entails, publicize European volunteering and the European digital information sources in the field of training and employment.

Meanwhile, Carmen Sandoval presented the program I, European citizen, with which aims to bring the Autonomous Community of Murcia Europe through a mobile classroom in which are some of the actions and European projects that have contributed to the growth and improvement of services and infrastructure in the region.

In addition, this exhibition is completed with talks on EU aimed at different groups and local centers on various topics such as civil rights, environment, youth and employment, among others.

The campaign also includes the documentary "We are Europe", screened during the conference today, in which several citizens of the region explain in person what has meant the EU integration in sectors such as education, training, agriculture, employment, business , innovation, research, culture, and health care.

This first day is completed with the researcher Salvador Cayuela presentations focused on Spain in the European framework, and the holder of the Jean Monnet Chair, Klaus Shriewer, European citizenship, which has also deepened rights policy and European , affecting fisheries.

The sessions will continue throughout the week with a program that includes extended school activities and youth, addressing the construction of the EU, its future projects, as well as volunteer programs and specific digital tools such as EURES.
